Despite recent moves to and from New York City, Widowspeak continues to bring the landscapes of its native western Washington to life with moody, atmospheric indie pop. On the new record, Expect the Best, guitarist and vocalist Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas joined forces with tour drummer James Jano and bassist Willy Muse to bring new energy and textures to their music. The opening guitar chords on songs like “Right On” immediately invoke their Pacific Northwest musical heritage while distant slide guitars draw you and the song into a trippy Southwestern daydream. The quartet’s mastery of mood and nuance was on full display during their recent visit to Studio 1A which you can listen to at the bottom of this post.
