Bad Bad Hats: “Shame”

Not a lot of touring bands made it down to Florida when Kerry Alexander was growing up. That kind of musical isolation can be awful–I experienced some of the same even in Dallas–but it’s also beneficial. By the time she moved to Minneapolis for college, Alexander had developed her own songwriting style and sound, borrowing equally from pop and punk. She linked up with bassist Noah Boswell and drummer Chris Hoge to form Bad Bad Hats, and the band built a quick buzz with a handful of DIY releases.

Bad Bad Hats add more of a sheen to their debut album, Psychic Reader, but their quirkiness stays intact. They shift between dreamy ballads, acoustic strummers, and full-on rock pyrotechnics with ease. On “Shame,” babbling electronics fight with Alexander’s whiplash guitar, making for a truly 21st century kind of punk song. Download “Shame” below.
