Big Scary: “Organism”

Last year, Big Scary won the Australian Music Prize for Not Art, the duo’s second album. It’s an inventive listen; naming one of their songs “Phil Collins” gives a clue to the kind of proggy pop the band deals in. On their new single, though, Big Scary heads in another direction. Tom Iansek and Jo Syme started the band as a genre exercise, and “Organism” packs a bunch of ideas into a tidy container. With its heavy drums, horns, and smoky vocals, the song sounds like garage rock dreamed up by a couple of hip-hop fans. Download “Organism” below and catch Big Scary at Stubb’s indoors on Friday, September 18. Doors at 9 p.m.
