Instead of going to grad school, Seattle’s Briana Marela used a loan to go to Iceland. When you hear her music, you immediately understand why. Like Iceland’s top artistic exports Björk and Sigur Rós, Marela makes ethereal songs that are musically chilly but emotionally warm. She even teamed up with Sigur Rós producer Alex Somers for her second album All Around Us, out Friday, August 21. Marela spent two-and-a-half months soaking up Reykjavík and pouring that atmosphere back into her music. Songs like “Surrender” are built around her looped voice and electronic beats, creating a dream world to escape to when this world gets to be a little too much.
