When I was growing up in Dallas, the Riverboat Gamblers were one of a seemingly endless supply of cool bands making nearby Denton even cooler. The Gamblers provided the punk spark, igniting area house shows and dive bars before permanently taking their anarchy to Austin in 2003.
Nowadays guitarist Ian MacDougall is diversifying his punk portfolio with Broken Gold, featuring fellow Gambler Rob Marchant alongside Ben Lance and Rich Cali. On their new EP Turning Blue–out November 20 via Chicken Ranch Records–the four reach back to the more melodic side of their record collections. The title track recalls the Replacements or Hüsker Dü, equal parts rousing and reflective. Download the song and see their upcoming tour dates below.
