Chastity Belt: “Different Now”

All this week, the Song of the Day spotlights artists performing at SXSW 2017.

Walla Walla’s Chastity Belt have built their discography on the honesty of their emotional journey from effervescent party rockers to a four-piece grappling with the demons of the world at large and personal womanhood. Their new album I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone maintains the serious tone of 2015’s Time to Go Home, but removes the sense of humor lingering from their debut EP in 2013.

“Different Now” checks all the boxes that create a certified laid-back indie-rocker. Simple and catchy right out of the gate but even when the sound fully blossoms, it stays controlled and comfortably catchy. The energy of the song is punctuated by the haunting, understated vocals of frontwoman and chief songwriter Jean Shapiro. In short, you’ve got a song perfect for poolside-chilling and long road-tripping.

“Different Now” appears on I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone, out June 2nd via Hardly Art.
