Chicano Batman: “Black Lipstick”

Over the next two weeks, the Song of the Day features SXSW 2016 artists.

Every year, I make two SXSW-related lists: bands I want to see, and bands I want to see based on name alone. Chicano Batman is definitely in the latter category, but don’t sleep on these guys. From the opening organ stabs of “Black Lipstick” I was hooked, because it reminded me of similar Tex-Mex creations cooked up a generation ago by the Sir Douglas Quintet and Sam The Sham & the Pharaohs.

In fact, Chicano Batman hail from L.A., and they instead bring a certain laid-back SoCal cool to the song. They’ve already toured with Jack White and Alabama Shakes, two other artists that are mining these old sounds but putting a modern spin on them. Listen to “Black Lipstick” below and catch Chicano Batman at SXSW 2016.
