Dana Falconberry & Medicine Bow is the April KUTX Artist of the Month. Learn more here.
Dana Falconberry’s songs are richly detailed orchestrations that, oddly enough, don’t sound like they’re orchestrated. Instead, they bloom, in every plant-based sense of the word. Falconberry is astutely attuned to nature; all sorts of plant and animal allusions pop up in her lyrics. But across her decade-plus career, the Austinite has also figured out a way to musically mimic the natural world. The chords, the melodies, the rhythms: they’re all patient, practically bathed in magic hour light.
From The Forest Came The Fire is Falconberry’s first to be billed alongside her band, Medicine Bow, and for good reason. Across the record, the band works as an organic unit, coloring Falconberry’s folk framework with little baroque touches. It’s a delight to see them live: watch the band play “Calling Mountain” at the Wild Basin Preserve and download a Studio 1A version of the song at the bottom of the page.
Dana Falconberry and Gina Dvorak and Karla Manzur from Medicine Bow are the guest DJs on My KUTX, this Saturday at 6 p.m.
