Dengue Dengue Dengue!: “Simiolo”

There’s a new wave of Latin American artists that’s reworking indigenous sounds in really creative ways. Dengue Dengue Dengue!–Felipe Salmon and Rafael Pereira–leads the Peruvian vanguard, mixing cumbia and chicha music with a modern sensibility. Their shows are full audiovisual experiences, featuring costumes, light projections, and enough dubbed-out bass to rattle the entire neighborhood. The pair also head up the Colectivo Auxiliar, a label that almost functions like a cultural exchange program. DJs from around the world team up with local Peruvian acts for eclectic, genre-blurring shows.

Dengue Dengue Dengue! bring their own sound–which they call “tropical bass”–to the Empire Control Room tomorrow night. “Simiolo” dates back to their 2012 debut La Alianza Profana, but it’s a pure distillation of the duo’s aesthetic: a centuries-old rhythm, chopped-up and refracted through a psychedelic haze.
