Gina Chavez: “Save Me”

All this week, the Song of the Day highlights ACL Fest 2016 artists.

If you live in Austin, you already know the one-woman powerhouse that is Gina Chavez. Chavez – who is now known for her bilingual lyrics and genre-spanning arrangements – was born and raised in the Live Music Capital of the world and didn’t even listen to Latino music until she began songwriting while studying in Buenos Aires in college. Since she discovered her love for folk music and dance in Argentina, Chavez has come to incorporate Spanish lyrics and rhythms into her music, with dynamic vocal performances across the emotional spectrum.

Chavez’s brand of Latin-folk has earned her eight Austin Music Awards over the course of her career, including the 2014-2015 AMA for Musician of the Year, Song of the Year (“Siete-D”) and Album of the Year for up.rooted – an independently-released full-length album that contains “Save Me” – a brassy, melancholy boogie that encapsulates everything that makes Gina Chavez a blast to listen to.

“Save Me” appears on up.rooted, out now. See Gina Chavez at ACL Fest 2016:
