Greg Vanderpool: “Into Dust” (Mazzy Star cover)

In addition to being in a bazillion bands–the Echocentrics, Brownout, Spanish Gold, and many, many more–Adrian Quesada runs an Austin recording studio called Level One Sound. To celebrate the studio’s one-year-and-change anniversary, Quesada is releasing a compilation called Live At Level One, featuring dozens of local artists tackling some interesting covers: Money Chicha takes on Prince, the Greyhounds dust off lesser-known soul man Bobby Charles, and Bavu Blakes and Element7D team up as World Trade, pulling off a nasty version of Nas’ “Made You Look.”

One of the highlights belongs to Greg Vanderpool, another Austin veteran who comes from a pretty different orbit than Quesada. Whether it’s Milton Mapes, Monahans, or his own solo work, Vanderpool crafts sprawling, textural Americana, so it’s fitting he chose to cover fellow cosmic-nauts Mazzy Star. “Into Dust” starts off sparse, but it slowly blasts off under atmospheric conditions. It’s a simple song made all the more haunting thanks to the Austin alchemy.

“Into Dust” appears on Live At Level One. Songs will be released each month, with the full collection due later this fall.
