The Walkmen’s announcement of a hiatus in 2014 came as bittersweet news. The longtime indie institution hit a Spoon-esque level of consistency over the course of a decade, crafting seven deeply-moving and invigorating albums that wear well. But the band’s pause allows for even more Walkmen-associated music as each member takes a solo turn. Singer Hamilton Leithauser knocked one out of the park last year with I Had A Dream You Were Mine, teaming up with former Vampire Weekend member Rostam.
Leithauser brought the record’s swooning, ’50s-influenced sound to KUTX Live at the Four Seasons last Friday. “Rough Going” turned out to be a perfect morning wake-up call, thanks to Leithauser’s distinctive croon. It’s the kind of song that already sounds like a golden oldie the first time you spin it.
