Lizzo: “Coconut Oil” (Live In Studio 1A)

Lizzo has gone from playing the flute in a Houston high school marching band to marching to her own beat. She’s based in Minneapolis these days, but her music has gone far and wide, thanks to her infectious blend of rap, R&B, humor, and a social message.

Earlier this year, she brought back-up dancers (and her formidable flute skills) to our Studio 1A and turned the space into her own impromptu dance party. “Coconut Oil” is a nimble song, detailing her own self-empowerment (thanks to mom) over a stuttering, gospel-influenced track. “We got different stories, we under one roof / So when it spring a leak we both got work to do,” she sings. It’s as simple as that, but it takes a talent as luminous as Lizzo to make it stick.

Lizzo plays tonight at Emo’s.
