Lucy Dacus: “Strange Torpedo”

All this week, the Song of the Day highlights ACL Fest 2016 artists.

In just twelve months, Richmond, VA’s Lucy Dacus has gone from recording an album as a school project to getting shout-outs from Vice Presidential hopeful Tim Kaine. That album, No Burden, has steadily picked up steam since its release in February. It’s understated on its first few listens, but Dacus’ blend of subtle pop hooks and fuzzy rock worms its way into your head and doesn’t let go.

Dacus’ lyrics have a side-eye humor to them that’s earned her comparisons to Courtney Barnett, but her gaze is more outwardly-focused. “I get smoke in my eyes every time I try to look you in the eye,” she sings on “Strange Torpedo,” perfectly capturing the odd allure of someone playing hard-to-get.

“Strange Torpedo” appears on No Burden, out now via Matador. Catch Lucy Dacus at ACL Fest 2016:
