The sheer variety of sounds going on in “Brave Enough”–doo-wop and rock mixed with Latin rhythms–is a perfect microcosm of the band that made it. Making Movies is a deeply cross-cultural group, formed in Kansas City but with Panamanian, Mexican, and American heritage. They’ve played with everyone from Grupo Fantasma to Neon Indian, and Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin is a big enough fan to produce two of Making Movies’ albums.
“Brave Enough” appears on the newly-released I Am Another You, a pointed social statement from a group whose own sound is its own form of protest. But Making Movies is also about celebration, and on the song, Hurray For The Riff Raff’s Alynda Segarra and Tennis’ Alaina Moore lend their beautiful voices to the choir. “Are you brave enough to make it on your own?”, singer/guitarist Enrique Chi asks in the chorus, but Making Movies is testament to the power of harmony.
“Brave Enough” appears on I Am Another You, out now. Making Movies plays with Hurray For The Riff Raff at the Mohawk on Sunday, June 4, presented by KUTX and Margin Walker.
