MALKY: “Diamonds”

Bulgaria and Hungary don’t immediately come to mind when talking about soul music, but country codes don’t matter to MALKY. The duo–which gets its name from the Bulgarian word for “little boy”–is made up of Daniel Stoyanov and Michael Vajna, both of whom trace their lineage to Eastern Europe. They met in Leipzig, Germany and connected over a shared love of American soul and R&B. Their Diamonds EP is a tentative debut; the duo veers between electronic and blues sounds, but when they combine the two, they hit on something more unique. “Diamonds” is built around slide guitar and atmospheric strings, which form an airy foundation for Stoyanov’s soulful croon.
