Back in 2012, Minneapolis’s ON AN ON had just formed in the wake of the dissolution of their previous band Scattered Trees. Using a block of recording sessions previously booked, the newly formed ON AN ON took the opportunity to instead record new material under the guidance of producer Dave Newfeld. Their debut album Give In was released the next year. After announcing an indefinite hiatus from touring last month, the band decided to revisit the song “Ghosts,” the first track from Give In, and make a music video.
“Ghosts” sonically lives up to its name with haunting vocals, a slow, dark din from the guitar, and a (then) newly-discovered sound using classic post-punk/new-wave drum machine. The tempo is in no hurry to get anywhere, but never causes the song to lose its momentum. In fact, it entreats you to follow the ghost to the song’s end.
“Ghosts” appears on Give In, out now. ON AN ON plays live in our Studio 1A tomorrow at 2 p.m. and at 3TEN tomorrow night.
