Porter Ray: “Arithmetic”

All this week, the Song of the Day spotlights artists performing at SXSW 2017.

Seattle’s Porter Ray has been steadily building his repertoire since he exploded onto the hip hop scene in 2013 with the release of three concordant albums (BLK GLDWHT GLD, RSE GLD). The loss of multiple family members and ensuing depression fueled the tone of Ray’s early lyrics but he further refined his delivery through the subsequent releases, Fundamentals (2014) and Nightfall (2015). Following Electric Rain, (the 2016 collaborative album produced entirely by Seattle’s Tele Fresco), comes Porter Ray’s 7th release, Watercolor.

Released last Friday, Watercolor‘s fourteen distinct tracks feature over a dozen guest artists and four different producers, all united by the authentic sounds of Seattle. Appearing about halfway through Watercolor, the dreamily lush “Arithmetic” features Porter Ray’s signature laid back melancholy flow and additional vocals from heavyweights Stas THEE Boss (of THEESatisfaction) and Infinite (of Narkotik and Tribal Productions).

“Arithmetic” appears on Watercolor, out now.
