At first, Houston’s Say Girl Say didn’t need electricity. The group formed around the harmonies of Brigette Yawn and Suzan Zaghmouth back in 2011. They started out singing in backyards and local parks, perfect natural settings for their folk-inflected music. A chance meeting with percussionist Luke Odom led to a fuller version of Say Girl Say, represented on the trio’s self-titled debut. Live in our Studio 1A, the band sounded like a sunnier version of Ibeyi. “Feather People” is an elliptical song, built around the singers’ call-and-response style, and you can download it below.
