For the past 35 years, Crazy Carl Hickerson has been a downtown staple: handing out flowers to passers-by on Sixth Street; running for City Council; and generally acting, well, crazy. He burst onto the scene in the early ’70s, right when the weirdness of the hippies and rednecks merged. For many, Crazy Carl still represents this idyllic view of Austin, and there’s a new documentary to prove it. It tells the story of Crazy Carl’s life, culminating in a song written by Shawn Sahm–son of Doug–and Kevin Russell (Shinyribs, the Gourds) that spells out some of the history of Austin’s music. Take a listen and download it below.
