Thee Oh Sees: “Poor Queen”

Spoon’s Britt Daniel often calls Thee Oh Sees his favorite rock band these days, and it’s easy to hear why. Few groups can tap into rock ‘n’ roll’s original menace like Thee Oh Sees. They’re unhinged and tight; they’re frightening and funny.

This year’s Mutilator Defeated At Last is something of a demarcation point for the band. Since 1997, Thee Oh Sees have waved the flag for the Bay Area’s garage-punk revival, but frontman John Dwyer relocated to Los Angeles in 2013 and repopulated the ranks with some fresh faces. Mutilator is more streamlined, reigning in some of the psychedelic weirdness in favor of a heavier atmosphere.

For all the power of their records, though, they don’t match the intensity of Thee Oh Sees’ live shows, which are sweaty, blistering affairs. Catch the band at Hotel Vegas tonight and tomorrow night, and download “Poor Queen” below. Show starts at 7 pm.
