Tiger Waves started out as a long-distance collaboration between Reid Comstock–who was in Chicago at the time–and Austin’s James Marshall. The band all lives locally now, but that sense of dislocation still pops up in the band’s music. Tippy Beach was home-recorded, but it sounds like an album out-of-time. ’60s psych-pop influences linger over these songs like a ghost. Tiger Waves can be bright and sunny like the Beach Boys or dark and mysterious like Mazzy Star, sometimes in the same song. “In Your Head” has a particular Western twang to it, sounding like a country song beamed in from outer space.
