Wand: “Dungeon Dropper”

Like fellow Angeleno Ty Segall, Wand matches sweetness with scuzziness. On “Flying Golem,” the acoustic guitar was up front; a year and two albums later, the psychedelic influences are harsher.

1000 Days–out September 25–keeps Wand’s forward momentum. The songs are simultaneously weirder and more direct, their hooks scuffed and distorted. Bass-heavy riffs and sunny harmonies collide on “Dungeon Dropper.” It’s a combination that ends up sounding like hollowed-out Black Sabbath: heavy and light at the same time.
