Wand: “Flying Golem”

On top of cranking out several albums per year, Ty Segall is now trying his hand on the other side of the glass. From his garage in L.A., Segall has started recording and producing a new crop of psych-rock bands, and he’s also fired up his own label, GOD? Records. One of the bands he’s worked with is fellow Angelenos Wand, whose debut album Ganglion Reef comes out August 26.

A ganglion is a cluster of nerve cells, and true to the album name, Wand’s music sends a shock directly towards the nervous system. First taste “Flying Golem” starts out with a sweet acoustic melody before the fuzz pedals and heavy guitars come out. Wand previously released a song alongside Mikal Cronin, which makes sense. Though Wand skews more to the psych side of the divide, there’s a sweetness buried beneath the distortion. Mark your calendars: Wand rolls into the Mohawk on September 5 with Ty Segall.
