YAWN: “Flytrap”

Just like Texas, the weather in Chicago can change on a dime. For the Windy City-based band YAWN, this is perfect inspiration. “The weather here is very unpredictable and bi-polar, in that when it’s hot one day it does not at all mean that it’s going to be tomorrow,” band member Daniel Perzan told the Huffington Post. “Winters we are usually stuck in-doors, so we actually can get really productive when we live together.” YAWN’s songs are often born from loose jams built around samples and hours spent in the studio, but in the live setting the band truly gets going. On the strength of these shows, the group was invited to Lollapalooza last year, making enough of an impression to tour with Tame Impala.

On September 9, YAWN releases its second album, Love Chills, and we’ve got a taste from it as today’s song of the day. Like the Chicago weather, “Flytrap” cycles through several moods in a short time frame. Starting out as a psychedelic ballad, the song opens up about halfway through into the kind of riff-heavy dance jam that YAWN has built its reputation on.
