Bob Dylan Award Nobel Prize in Literature

This morning Bob Dylan was announced as this year’s winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, the first American to win the award since Toni Morrison in 1993. Dylan is the first non-traditional wordsmith to be awarded the prize, with the committee affirming Dylan’s lyrics alone make him one of the greatest living poets in the English tradition. Officially, the committee notes his “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” While there is no questioning Dylan’s contributions to American poetry and his influence on every generation of writers and musicians since, his winning the award is being seen by some as a continued snub by the Nobel committee due to their lack of enthusiasm towards American literature and its authors. This fear is heightened by rumors from earlier this year of the Nobel committee had considered honoring authors Philip Roth or Don DeLillo, the former of which anticipates winning the award each year. In fact, there was a proposal to honor both authors at once as a sort-of American author catch-all, which, while not unheard of, certainly doesn’t scream “support and respect” from a committee that has only awarded about a dozen American authors in the Literature prize’s 100 + years. All of that said, there is simply no doubting Bob Dylan’s transformative contributions to rock and folk music as well as American poetry and songwriting, making him a more than worthy Nobel Laureate. Pet Sounds Tour Coming Back to Austin, This Time Indoors

Brian Wilson announced this week that he is extending his Pet Sounds tour into early 2017. That’s extra good news for Austin Beach Boys fans who missed their opportunity to see the concert when Levitation Fest was cancelled back in May of this year because Austin has been re-added to Wilson’s list of tour dates, playing ACL Live on May 13, 2017, just 3 days ahead of Pet Sounds’s 51st anniversary. Tickets for the concert go on sale this Friday at 10 A.M. via ACL Live’s website. (Austin360)
