Participants Announced for British Council’s Next Musicians in Residence program in China
British musicians Emmy the Great, David Lyttle, and Quinta are heading to China for a six-week residence as part of the British Council and PRS for Music Foundation’s Musicians in Residence program. The trio will travel independently to Chinese cities in various corners of the country throughout the program, creating new work, exchanging ideas, and building cultural bonds between the countries. In previous years, participants have included Imogen Heap, Jamie Woon, and Gareth Bonello. and as British Council’s Music Director Cathy Graham affirms: “Every residency so far has resulted in diverse and unique work from the artists involved…who all demonstrate a deep commitment to sharing ideas and experiences with local people in China.” The trio is likely to head out sometime between April and June of next year. Remembering Experimental Music Pioneer Pauline Oliveros
Experimental music pioneer Pauline Oliveros passed away over the weekend at the age of 84. Oliveros was a famed musician and leader in the development of experimental electronic music. She was a founding member of the San Francisco Tape Music Center, the Bay area experimental epicenter that housed composers like Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Morton Subtonick. Throughout her six-decade career, Oliveros was known for her radical embrace of new technology used to create music and in engineering new sounds from standard instruments, including her primary instrument, the accordion. In addition to composing and performing, Oliveros made major contributions to music theory and the academic music lexicon, coining the term “Deep Listening”: an exercise she describes as “listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what one is doing.” Oliveros received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in 1952, where she was a founding member of the school’s local chapter of the Tau Beta Sigma Honorary Band sorority. Throughout her life, Oliveros was awarded multiple honorary doctorates, the Guggenheim Fellowship for composition, and most recently, the John Cage Award from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts.
