SXSW Wrap-Up and Catch-Up
Another year of SXSW has come and gone, and whether you were wading around in the thick of it all week, or if you stayed as far away from the mayhem as possible, KUTX has your In Case You Missed It covered Austin Music Experience style. The annual four-day KUTX Live at the Four Seasons showcase raised nearly $41,000 for the Seton Shivers Cancer Center, and the event raised capacity funds two of those days thanks to the continued support of our listeners and the Austin community. Remembering Louis Jay Meyers
On a more sobering note, the first day of South By Southwest was met with the passing of one of the festival’s four co-founders. Louis Jay Meyers served as the festival’s first music director and held the position for eight years before selling his shares to fellow co-founders in 1994 just before the addition of the SXSW film and interactive portions. Meyers moved back to Austin last year, having spent the interim time working and collaborating with musicians around the world before returning to the states to direct the annual Folk Alliance International convention from 2005 to 2014. Meyers suffered a fatal heart attack early Friday morning at the age of 60. Mayor Steve Adler responded to the loss by declaring March 18th Louis Meyers Day.
Sir McCartney Seeks to Commandeer Catalog
Sir Paul McCartney has embarked on a mission to take back what’s his! That is, half of the Lennon-McCartney Beatles catalog. The catalog is currently owned by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, but due to a loophole in US copyright law, as long as McCartney is alive, the copyright will expire in 2018. The loophole essentially gives any living artist the right to apply to regain ownership of their material 56 years after initial publication. This is McCartney’s third attempt to regain ownership of his half of the Beatles catalog since 1969.
