Bill Frisell @ KUTX 03.08.2015

For years, guitarist, composer, arranger, and band leader Bill Frisell has been consistently surprising audiences with his versatility and penchant for improvisation.

Producing a contemporary jazz sound with touches of rock, classical, progressive folk, country, and noise music wrapped up in 1960’s inspiration, Frisell’s interpretations have been increasingly expanding in scope and style, while occasionally paying direct tribute to the past. Having worked with an almost mind-blowing array of artists that include Paul Motian, Elvis Costello, Ginger Baker, Suzanne Vega, Loudon Wainwright III, Van Dyke Parks, Vic Chesnutt, Ron Sexsmith, Marianne Faithful, David Sanborn, and Brian Eno, throughout his career, Frisell has also composed music for the soundtracks of films by directors like Wim Wenders and Gus Van Sant. His latest project “Woodie Guthrie’s Better World,” which features the Big Sur Quartet, sees Frisell diving into the past once again, this time to redeliver Guthrie’s protest spirit in string-centric arrangements.
