Chicha Libre at KUTX 9.13.13 @ 2 p.m.

It’s a chicha kinda day here at KUTX. Austin’s Money Chicha is today’s song of the day, and we’re pleased to be hosting Brooklyn’s Chicha Libre in Studio 1A today at 2 p.m. Chicha is a kind of music that roared out of Peru in the 60s and 70s. It combines indigenous Peruvian melodies and rhythms, Colombian cumbia, plus bits of surf rock and psychedelia for a music just as intoxicating as the Andean corn beer it takes its name from.

Chicha is getting a renaissance here in the States these days thanks to bands like Money Chicha and Chicha Libre. This weekend, along with Tucson’s Chicha Dust, they’re hosting the first-ever Chicha Summit, with a show tonight at Houston’s Continental Club, and Saturday (Sept. 14) here in Austin at the Flamingo Cantina. But before you head to the show, keep your radios tuned to KUTX this afternoon, and gulp down some delicious chicha–music that is.
