Como Las Movies 8.27.18

Ever since the Laredo born musicians in Grupo Fantasma decided to call Austin home nearly 20 years ago the city has seen steady growth of artists blending traditional Latin rhythms with R&B, rock, even electronic music. Little surprise then that Beto Martinez of Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, and Money Chicha agreed to manage production for one of Austin’s newest Latin fusion outfits, Como Las Movies. Like his predecessors, Como Las Movies frontman Nelson Valente Aguilar channeled his Texas border town roots into his own distinctive style of synth-driven Cumbia. After moving to Austin, Aguilar teamed up with likeminded sonic explorers Rene Chavez (vocals), Jaguar (Bass), and Alfredo Rios (percussion) and in 2013 Como Las Movies was born. The band just released their aptly titled EP, Nuevo Wave and celebrated the release with a show at The ABGB. Before they did they brought a few of the new songs to Studio 1A to test run in front of a radio audience. Listen to that session in the player at the bottom of the post!
