Haunting reverberations of mournful country and gospel music permeate the lo-fi blend of sounds presented by Daughn Gibson, who, after working several odd jobs – including trucker, warehouse worker, and adult bookstore cashier – has emerged as an increasingly exciting solo act. The darker corners of Americana are explored in both Gibson’s critically acclaimed debut album, All Hell, as well as his latest release Me Moan, and yet after listening you’re left feeling more refreshed and soothed than drained or melancholic. Gibson’s songs are likened to the writing of Cormac McCarthy, with lyrical themes of “small-town tragedy” delivered in a rich baritone that seems to ebb and flow through often airy and dreamlike atmospheres of looped sounds and subtle, pulsing percussion.
