Father John Misty 9.29.17

Father John Misty is a fatalist romantic. Joshua Tillman is both entertainer and critic–no subject, not even himself, is safe. On his latest album, Pure Comedy, he offers biting commentary on capitalism, the culture industry, and the rapid pace of technological development. On “Total Entertainment Forever,” Tillman argues virtual reality is no different from what we have here on earth: people trying to make meaning where there is none. Under swelling pianos and a chorus of voices he ponders, “oh, who will critique them once he’s left?” Death and meaninglessness is a guarantee in Tillman’s world, but sometimes a Talking Heads song comes on at the bar and you’re reminded that “it’s a miracle to be alive.” Father John Misty graced us with his presence at Studio 1A on Friday.
