Food @ KUTX 1.20.15

If you can hear your stomach rumbling for acoustic-electric jazz, it’s time for some Food.

The duo formed in 1998 after a chance meeting between saxophonist Iain Ballamy and drummer and electronics improviser Thomas Strønen in Trondheim, Norway. Between the two accomplished musicians, Ballamy and Strønen have made individual appearances on around 120 albums since the mid-80s. Food’s distinct sound can be atrributed to the delicate balance between Ballamy’s melodic and lyrical playing and Strønen’s electronic soundscapes and grooves. And while Food plays primarily as a duo, they often collaborate and record with musical guests and friends.

Between 2000 and 2007, Food released five albums across two record labels before signing to the legendary ECM jazz label. 2010’s Quiet Inlet and 2012’s Mercurial Balm garnered the duo unprecedented recognition and exposure, along with acclaim for their contemporary jazz style. Food is curently working on a new record for ECM Records together with Austrian ambient guitarist Christian Fennesz (Fennesz). This studio recording is expected to take Food to a new musical space, working with sound-master Ulf Holand (A- ha, Satyricon, David Bowie) and writing more stuctured-groove oriented compositions.

You can catch Food on Wednesday, January 21st at the North Door or you can stream them right here at KUTX!
