It’s interesting to think about the vast number of great songs that go unwritten, notebooks full of half written lyrics, incomplete melodies, forgotten choruses; this is an accepted fact of life for all writers to be sure. Then there are those whose work deserves a second look- composer Albert Brumley is perhaps one of these writers. Brumley’s catalogue includes songs I’ll Meet You In The Morning, Turn The Radio On, and one of the most covered tunes of all time I’ll Fly Away– who knows how many other classics exist in the pages of his unread journals? Ausin-based House of Songs and the I’ll Fly Away Foundation have partnered on a very cool project to bring life to just those songs.
Chris Hawke and Miranda Dawes, Austin natives, joined with Australian musician Dan Crannitch on the project with the goal of fusing creative energies to re-envision Brumley’s work in our modern day, often times with nothing more than a few of his barely legible lyrics. House of Songs is behind the partnership, with a vision to export Austin talent by building bridges with other creative centers around the world.
The artists are heading to Nashville where they will perform the songs at the Americana Festival, but Austinites can see them this Tuesday, September 20th, for a 12pm performance at Servant Church on E. 38th. Listen to our conversation as well as a few performances by the artists below.
