Jimmy “Duck” Holmes is a bonafide, real-deal country-blues legend. Born in 1947 in Mississippi, he’s been plucking strings and spinning yarns ever since.  For the last forty years Jimmy has owned and run Blue Front Cafe; arguably Mississippi’s oldest surviving juke joint. The watering hole is famous for buffalo fish, moonshine and Bentonia Blues. The cafe was the local haunt of greats like Jack Owens, Henry Stuckey and Skip James. Hoards of local musicians would gather to chew the fat, shoot some pool and play some tunes. Jimmy’s raw, uncompromising blues has kept this flame of Bentonia burning; his sound is a careful blend of innovation and tradition. Last year saw the release of his latest record It Is What It Is on his own newly formed label, Blue Front Records. The album is gritty, passionate and authentic. Jimmy “Duck” Holmes dropped past Studio 1A ahead to play some of his favorite tracks. Check out the full session below!
