LA-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Julia Holter stopped by Studio 1A this week ahead of her first show in Austin to play a few songs off her most recent release from last October, Aviary (Domino Records). The much anticipated follow-up to her 2015 record Have You In My Wilderness, Holter’s newest release is a ninety-minute meditation on the overwhelming nature of being a person in today’s media-saturated world.
Combining Holter’s literary lyrics, theatrical vocals, and a vast tapestry of synths, strings, and percussion supplied by her band – over the course of fifteen songs, Holter creates an expansive soundscape that is impossible to pin down.
