Kishi Bashi 11.30.17

Kishi Bashi; multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, filmmaker and all-round legend is a man of many hats and boy does he wear them well. Kishi Bashi is the musical pseudonum of Karou Ishibashi, who spent years making a name for himself as a touring violinist with acts like Sondre Lerche, Regina Spektor and Of Montreal. In 2003 he co-founded the New York electronic rock outfit Jupiter One before embarking on a solo career under the moniker Kishi Bashi in 2011. Kishi Bashi’s third solo album, and latest release, Sonderlust, sees the artist largely abandoning his primary songwriting tool, the violin, in favor of more electronically driven, lush soundscapes. Co-produced by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor the album was forged through writer’s block and heartache; the result is intimate and somber. It is music straight from the soul. Kishi Bashi’s latest creative undertaking is a documentary film titled Project 9066 which follows his quest to process his identity and the lessons learned from the Japanese internment. Kishi Bashi dropped past Studio 1A for an intimate performance, check out the full session below!
