Good musicians do more than create a purely auditory experience. Truly talented artists evoke an emotional, sometimes even physical response. Before today, I was convinced that goosebumps were the single identifier bodies used to let people know that, “hey, this is some powerful stuff.” Fortunately, Australian singer-songwriter Matt Corby came to Studio1A today and those little goosebumps were quickly replaced by a surge of electricity that traveled from the bottom of your feet, up your spine, to the ends of your hair. Corby’s art is an even mix of psychedelic soul and rhythm and blues and his voice is nothing short of a spiritual experience.
Corby’s national breakthrough came with his 2011 EP, Into the Flame which skyrocketed to No. 3 on the ARIA Singles Chart (Australia’s version of Billboard) and five months later, was certified 6x Platinum. This EP was one of four wildly popular releases by Corby that preceded debut album Telluric. Produced by Elektra Records, Telluric is a booming success all across Australia. So while most of the United States is just discovering Corby’s talent, we’re a little late to the party. For fans of Ben Howard and The Middle East, you’re in for a treat.
