Miss Lavelle White 6.28.16

They don’t get much better than Miss Lavelle White. The daughter of Louisiana sharecroppers, Miss Lavelle White began her singing career after moving to Houston as a teenager in the late 1950s. While performing in Houston clubs, White caught the attention of Duke/Peacock Records empresario Don Robey, who recorded 14 of her songs, including several she  wrote herself. Her biggest songwriting success came with “Lead Me On”, co-written and performed by fellow Duke/Peacock artist Bobby Blue Bland. From there Miss Lavelle moved to Chicago to lend her voice to the city’s legendary blues scene, working with greats like Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. Throughout her 70+ years as an R&B singer Miss Lavelle White has performed with icons like Aretha Franklin, Same Cooke, Otis Redding and Junior Parker to name just a few. White now lives in Austin where she released her very first record in 1994 with the help of Clifford Antone.

Miss Lavelle White joined Jody Denberg in Studio 1A on the verge of her 87th birthday. To celebrate she will be throwing a party at Antone’s Nightclub Sunday 7/3 with performances from friends Marcia Ball, Shelly King, Carolyn Wonderland and more. Until then, jump in her live session from KUTX!
