From Austin to Brooklyn to India, Phoebe Hunt & The Gatherers have been honing their gypsy-jazz for the past five years, and the result is oh-so sweet. With deep roots in Americana songwriting their latest release Shanti’s Shadow sees the inclusion of Hindu spirituality; it was recorded in the wake of the band’s musical pilgrimage to India to study with master violinist Kala Ramnath. This intensive, spiritual journey bleeds through in the album’s lush soundscapes and intense rhythms. The result is a swelling, breathing bluegrass that is strung through with Phoebe’s soulful vocals and tight fiddle. Shanti, Hindi for peace, is Phoebe’s given name and the album is a vulnerable examination of her own ‘shadow’. Tracks like “Just for Tonight” waltz through a painful personal experience, while “Frolic of the Bees” uses playful, folky mandolin as a call for openness in society. Phoebe Hunt & The Gatherers brought their spiritual bluegrass to Studio 1A ahead of their album release show at the Paramount Theater. Check it out below!
