Sophisticated Ladies @ KUTX 07.21.2015

Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Ladies” is taking to the Austin stage for the first time this summer.

For the next month, the Zach Theatre will be home to the first local stage production of the Tony Award winning Broadway musical, “Sophisticated Ladies.” Set in Harlem’s infamous Cotton Club, the celebratory show follows the life and career of one of  jazz’s most iconic composers, bandleaders, and pianists — Duke Ellington. The musical show has been on-and-off the stage since 1981 and is known to boast an intricate production, featuring a full on-stage orchestra, jazz vocalists, an ensemble of tap dancers, and eye-catching period costumes, as well as Ellington’s unforgettable classics like “Mood Indigo,” “Take the A Train,” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).”

“Sophisticated Ladies” opens tomorrow, June 23rd, at the  Zach Theatre and will run until August 23rd. You can stream some of the show’s music right here on KUTX.
