Stephen Doster 9.5.17

Austin singer-songwriter Stephen Doster has been making music for more than two decades, and boy is he good at it. The local legend has played alongside the likes of Willie Nelson and Joe Cocker, produced for artists like Maren Morris, acted as music ambassador for the U.S. State Department in Africa and was recently inducted into the Texas Music Legends Hall of Fame. Needless to say, the man is a bit of a musical magician. In 2014 Doster broke an 18-year release hiatus with Arizona, and has followed it up this summer with New Black Suit. This new album is a poignant reflection on friends that have passed, and what their legacy means to the living. The album is dedicated to George Reiff, who lost his battle with cancer in May of this year, and includes some of Reiff’s last recorded work. Despite the lyrical theme of loss, New Black Suit is musically upbeat; the songs are loving tributes characterized by driving melodies, vocal harmonies and an ear for perfection. Stephen Doster dropped past studio 1A to spin some yarns and play some tracks, ahead of his release show at The Townsend. Check out the full session below!
