Terry Allen at KUTX 1.18.2013

There must be something in the water out in Lubbock. At least that’s what comes to mind when looking at the list of musical talent to come out of the northwestern Texas town: Buddy Holly, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, Lloyd Maines, Ponty Bone and Terry Allen. But if you ask Allen, the key ingredient to the town’s creative success is…boredom. Allen left Lubbock in the early sixties “with a vengeance”, and since that time his life has been anything but boring. He counts Guy Clark among his best friends and his songs have been recorded by artists such as Lucinda Williams, Robert Earl Keen, Little Feat and David Byrne, among others. In addition to being a talented songwriter, Allen’s visual art has received numerous awards and honors.

For the past decade, Allen focused on his art and theater works, but now, after 13 years he’s releasing a brand new album of songs. Bottom of the World , Terry Allen’s 11th album,  features the quintessential songwriting Allen is known for, with somewhat stripped down arrangements. He’s joined by both friends, like co-producer Lloyd Maines and Guy Clark, and family, his son Bukka on accordion and daughter-in-law Sally on vocals. Bottom of the World comes out on January 22nd. Terry Allen will play the Cactus Cafe Friday, January 18th at 8pm. Hear Terry Allen RIGHT HERE in Studio 1a with Jody Denberg.
