The Black Lips have slipped in and out of several styles since their inception in 1999. On their upcoming ninth record, Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart, due out January 24th on Vice/Fire, the band veers closer to country than ever before. With a southern-fried twang and a wink of self-awareness, the record harkens back to the pastoral sounds of “Sweet Kin” and “Make It” from their eponymous 2003 debut. The record also marks a return to the raw, dangerous sounds of their earlier efforts, a result of their decision to produce the LP without ProTools or any other contemporary technologies. Having undergone a series of lineup changes in the back half of the decade, The Black Lips in their current form display a stylistic evolution and matured approach to songwriting that results in some of their best music since the aughts.
