Canadian indie rockers The New Pornographers visit Studio 1A while on tour with their 2019 album, In the Morse Code of Brake Lights. The album remains sonically bright and powerful as ever while lyrically cruising into a darker and more political territory thanks to frontman and primary songwriter Carl Newman‘s frustration with the modern sociopolitical dynamics, commenting that “it’s inescapable.” On their track Higher Beams, he reflects that he “didn’t mean to mean it to be a political song but there are lines that where I go, ‘God, it’s hard to take than any other way.'” Politics aside, The New Pornographers continue to produce hook-heavy power pop that packs a punch in its 23 years as a band.
Newman is joined in the studio by Kathryn Calder on keys and vocals, Joe Seiders on drums and vocals, Simi Stone on violin and vocals, John Collins on bass.
