Bill Callahan performs “Another Song” on a hot summer morning in August 2020 at Hancock Park, Austin, TX.

“Gold Record'” is out now on Drag City.

NPR LIVE SESSIONS/KUTX – Bill Callahan, shot from a safe distance by Michael Minasi August 2020.

The 53 year-old artist Bill Callahan, with his deep thoughtful drawl, first moved to Austin over a decade and a half ago.

Last summer, he visited Studio 1A to celebrate the long awaited release Shepard in a Sheepskin Vest, his first in almost six years. A prolific songwriter – releasing an album every year or two (sometimes two in a year) since his first release under the Smog moniker in 1992 –  the six year hiatus between albums was unusual to fans, but the reason for that wait was nothing out of the ordinary. Just the marriage and a baby escalator ride.

Now that the big life changes have settled down a bit, Callahan is back at it, writing his latest album last year while on tour with Shepard in A Sheepskin Vest. Gold Record was recorded in the before times and has seen a digital release, one beautiful song a week since June 29th with a physical release September 4, 2020.
