Laura Marling Launches Podcast About Women in the Music Industry

British singer-songwriter Laura Marling has launched a new podcast series aimed not just at women in the music industry, but analyzing women’s place in the industry and whether it really is a place of equality. The podcast, called Reversal of the Muse, is on a mission to uncover the challenges posed by a male-dominated industry and the scrutiny given to female creativity. The idea for the series actually came out of conversations with friends and other female musicians about female creativity, a conversation that turned into an obsession for Marling, who says after ten years of recording she’s wondering how her career may have been supported and shaped differently if she had been surrounded by female execs in the music industry. The first episode, released today, features the sisters of the group Haim and sound engineer Vanessa Parr. (THE FADER)

Band Boy Mogul Lou Pearlman Dies in Prison at 62

Controversial businessman responsible for forming both the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, Lou Pearlman, died in a federal prison over the weekend, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Unofficially known as the Boy Band Mogul, Pearlman made a name for himself in the 90s after forming the iconic boy band the Backstreet Boys by holding a $3 million nationwide search for unknown talent. The Backstreet Boys would go on to sell 130 million records, cementing them as the best-selling boy band of all time. Pearlman created *NSYNC two years later, effectively providing the launch pad for Justin Timberlake’s music career. Pearlman went on to manage other boy bands such as LFO and O-Town. Unfortunately, Pearlman also had a dark side to his businessman career, convincing at least 250 individual investors to put money into two fake companies (AKA Ponzi schemes) for two decades. The judge said his victims included “family…close friends and people in their 70s and 80s who have lost their life savings.” Pearlman was serving a 25-year sentence in Texarkana. An official cause of death has not been announced. (BBC)
