Eight heads are better than one when it comes to Austin Latin funk octet Brownout. Formed by members of the Latin funk orchestra Grupo Fantasma, the original intention was to have a bit of fun but the sound proved so popular they released their first recording in 2005. This ‘just for fun’ attitude would carry over to 2013 when the band began bringing soul to Black Sabbath covers; a live performance that proved so wildly popular that it spawned two studio albums and a private concert for Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness himself. After four years of Brown Sabbath, the band is back to basics with aptly titled original EP Over the Covers. Recorded in snatches while touring, Over the Covers showcases Brownout’s trademark Latino soul yet has a tang of that Black Sabbath darkness. Upbeat, catchy tracks are underpinned with lofty lyrics about the human condition; “Things You Say” uses fun, psychedelic rhythm to detail the breakdown of a relationship. Brownout is proving themselves to be not just ahead of the pack, but forming one all of their own. They piled into Studio 1A to showcase their unique sound ahead of their release shows at Antone’s.
