Taj Weekes: “Rain Rain”

All this week, the Song of the Day features artists playing at this weekend’s Wobeon Fest–the Austin world music festival taking over Ironwood Hall on Saturday.

Taj Weekes takes a pan-Caribbean approach to his form of reggae. The singer was born in St. Lucia, but his band members come from across the region: Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, and more. Even his subject matter looks across class and nationality differences; in Weekes’ hands, New Orleans is as much a part of the Caribbean community as the other island nations. “Rain Rain” was originally released on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and the song critiques the handling of the crisis, all set to a roots-inspired reggae beat.

Catch Taj Weekes at Wobeon Fest starting at 12:30 a.m. on the main stage.
